Variations of the Models

You have now determined the model of your 1886 Winchester.  If you have a Sporting Rifle you will next need to determine if you have a standard or deluxe/fancy version, takedown, and/or lightweight.   Both Standard and Deluxe versions had lightweight models. If you have a Carbine, you might have a 'Trapper' version.

 

Step 2: Determine the Sporting Model variation type

Select one of the following choices

bulletThe barrel is 26", the frame is solid, the caliber is GREATER than .45-70 (e.g., .45-90, .50-110 Express, .50-100-450), and the stock is straight with no checkering -- You have the Sporting Standard version.

Standard 1886 Caliber gun

bulletThe barrel is 26", the frame is solid, the caliber is GREATER than .45-70 (e.g., .45-90, .50-110 Express, .50-100-450), and the stock and forearm are checkered.  It may be straight or pistol grip -- You have the Sporting Deluxe version.

 

bulletThe barrel is 26", the frame is solid, the caliber is LESS THAN than .45-70 (e.g., .33 WCF, .38-56 WCF, .40-65 WCF, .40-82 WCF), and the stock is straight with no checkering -- You have the Extra Lightweight Sporting Standard version.

Step 2: Determine the Carbine Model variation type

The barrel is LESS THAN 22" (from 14" to 20"), the front sight is 3/4" from the barrel tip, the frame is solid, the stock is straight with no checkering, you have a saddle ring, and a band holds on the forearm -- You have the Carbine Trapper Version.

Once you have determined the model and version,
Study the Outline of Features for possible modifications to the original rifle.

You have now completed STEP #2 of this Appraisal.  Be sure that you have marked off in the box at the right for the appropriate variety of 1886 that you have
